Syllabus

1. Building Materials
Stones – classification, geological, physical and chemical, qualities of good stone, method of quarrying. Bricks – composition of good brick earth, manufacturing, clamps and kilns, qualities of bricks, tests on bricks, classification, special types of bricks. Cement – composition of cement, properties, manufacturing, field tests, varieties of cement. Cement concrete –constituents, functions of constituents, water cement ratio and workability, mixing of concrete, grades of concrete, varieties of concrete. Timber – classification of tree, structure of tree, defects in timber, preservation and seasoning of timber, timber products, Miscellaneous materials – Sand, lime, plastics, asbestos, bitumen, asphalt, plaster of paris, glass, paint.

2. Building Construction
Masonry- Technical terms used in masonry, classification of stonemasonry, types of bond, points to be observed while supervising masonry. Foundation – Objects, inspection of site, bearing capacity of soil, failure of foundation, types of foundation, setting out of foundation. Lintels – purposes of lintel and arches, types of lintels and arches. Stairs – location, technical terms, requirements of a good stair, classification of stair. Roof – technical terms, classification, trusses. Damp proof courses – causes, effects due to dampness, method of DPC. Types of scaffolding, classification of carpentry joints, doors and windows – classification, plastering and pointing, types of ground and upper floors.

3. Building planning and estimating
Planning – Consideration affecting cost, orientation of building, principles of building design, design of residential building, office building, school building, cinema theatre, auditoriums, hospital building etc. plumbing, carpentry, wiring. Estimating, types of estimate, detailed estimate – quantity survey, analysis of rate, abstract of cost, building estimate.

4. Surveying and Levelling
Surveying – introduction, classifications of surveying, chaining, instruments used for chaining, survey station, survey lines, check line, offsets, field works, plane table surveying, instruments used for plane tabling, working operation, methods of plane tabling, compass surveying, bearings and angles, principles of magnetic compass, temporary adjustments of compass, local attraction, levelling, definitions, methods of levelling, levelling instruments, temporary adjustments, steps in levelling, booking and reducing levels, profile levelling, levelling problems, contouring.

5. Geometrical drawing
Geometrical figures, geometrical constructions, types of lines, scales – representative fraction (RF), construction of different scales, orthographic projection – terms, first and third angle projections, isometric projection, oblique projection

6. Hydraulics and Irrigation
Necessity of irrigation, types of irrigation, advantages and disadvantages of irrigation, rainfall and measurements, head works, types of dams, irrigation canals, cross drainage works, storage reservoir, hydro electric power projects, classification, component parts of hydro electric
projects.

7. Mensuration
Plane figure, rectilinear figure, Area of different figures, solids.

8. Water supply and Sanitary Engineering
Water supply schemes, water requirements, factors affecting demand, sources of water, yield of well, pumps, conveyance of water, quality of water, purification of water, distribution system, appurtenances in distribution system, Sanitary Engineering, systems of sewerage, sewer appurtenances, traps – classifications, sanitary fittings, systems of plumbing, testing of drains
and pipes.
